International Surgical Visitation, Buderim Private Hospital

Dr. Robinson at Buderim Private Hospital had the honour of hosting a distinguished group of Japanese shoulder surgeons, each internationally respected and well-published in their field. They visited to observe Dr. Robinson’s expertise performing reverse total shoulder replacements.

It was both an honour and a humbling experience for Dr. Robinson to share his refined techniques and insights with such accomplished surgeons. Their interest in his meticulous approach underscores his growing reputation in shoulder replacement surgery.

QHSS Annual Scientific Meeting, Noosa

Over the weekend, Dr. Robinson had the privilege of attending the Queensland Hand Surgery Society (QHSS) Annual Scientific Meeting in Noosa. This 2-day event brought together specialists from across Australia to share the latest advancements, scientific research, and best practices in hand surgery.

A highlight of the conference was the opportunity to meet and learn from Dr. Toshi Nakamura from Japan, a world-renowned expert in the field of triangular fibrocartilage complex repair (TFCC), who delivered an insightful keynote address on cutting-edge techniques and innovations in hand surgery.

We’re excited to bring these new insights and practices to our patients, ensuring that they receive the most up-to-date care available.

Surgical Visitation, Bellvitge University Hospital, Barcelona, Spain

Dr. Mark Robinson recently had the privilege of assisting Dr. Abdul-Ilah Hachem in Barcelona, Spain, performing an arthroscopic free bone block surgery using a distal tibial allograft for recurrent anterior inferior shoulder dislocations. Dr. Hachem, a world expert in this field, pioneered the technique, which employs cerclage sutures to secure the bone block. This innovative approach significantly reduces the potential complications associated with screw fixation while also lowering redislocation rates.

In addition to the bone block surgery, Dr. Robinson assisted in a lower trapezius tendon transfer, a procedure designed to address massive rotator cuff tears that cannot be repaired using standard techniques. Working alongside Dr. Hachem was an incredibly rewarding experience, equipping Dr. Robinson with the skills to perform arthroscopic bone block surgery for recurrent shoulder instability safely and reliably.

Surgical Visitation, San Camillo-Forlanini Hospital, Rome, Italy

Dr. Robinson had the privilege of working alongside international expert Professor Marco Spoliti, Director of Orthopaedics at San Camillo-Forlanini Hospital in Rome, to advance his expertise in performing reverse total shoulder arthroplasty with GPS navigation.

During this collaboration, Dr. Robinson and Professor Spoliti exchanged insights on the latest research and best practices in both non-operative and operative management of shoulder arthritis and rotator cuff tear arthropathy, as well as future directions in anatomical and reverse total shoulder replacements.

This valuable opportunity to discuss strategies for managing complex patient cases was a fitting conclusion to Dr. Robinson’s experience in Rome, Italy.

2024 Masters Course on Shoulder Arthroplasty, Sicily, Italy

Dr. Robinson was honoured to be a panellist at the 2024 Masters Course on Shoulder Arthroplasty in Sicily. He shared valuable insights into managing complex patient cases through anatomical and reverse shoulder replacements.

Joined by esteemed international experts, including Dr. Howard Routman (USA), Dr. Pierre-Henri Flurin (France), Dr. Matthew Kent (UK), and Dr. Stephanie Muh (USA), Dr. Robinson contributed to discussions on the indications for shoulder replacements and the use of alternative bearing surfaces, such as pyrocarbon. These innovations aim to enhance pain relief, function, and long-term outcomes for younger patients suffering from shoulder arthritis.

Dr. Robinson engaged in several panel discussions, addressing key topics such as:

Campolongo Hospital, Salerno, Italy

Mark recently had the opportunity to meet with the esteemed & internationally renowned Italian shoulder surgeon, Dr. Alfonso Maria Romano, at the Campolongo Hospital in Marina di Eboli, Salerno. During this visit, Dr. Robinson scrubbed in to observe four reverse total shoulder replacement surgeries.

The team engaged in discussions regarding Dr. Romano’s techniques for managing conditions such as arthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy, and shoulder infections through reverse shoulder replacement. Additionally, they explored his innovative approach to soft tissue balancing around the shoulder joint and emphasised the crucial role of physiotherapy in rehabilitation following reverse total shoulder replacement.

Arthrex headquarters, Munich, Germany

Dr. Mark Robinson recently visited the Arthrex headquarters in Munich, Germany, which focuses on advancements in shoulder instability treatments for Europe, Great Britain, Africa, and the Middle East. During his time there, he participated in a cadaver lab, where he learned innovative arthroscopic techniques to address shoulder instability, especially in cases with glenoid bone loss. This included the use of an arthroscopic bone block and a labral repair utilizing 1.8mm knotless Fibertak anchors.

In preparation for an upcoming visit with Dr. Hachem, an international expert who developed these procedures, Dr. Robinson also explored cutting-edge techniques for stabilizing the acromioclavicular (AC) joint and the coracoclavicular (CC) ligament. Additionally, he learned methods for augmenting rotator cuff repairs using the long head of the biceps tendon through arthroscopy. These advancements will enhance his ability to provide state-of-the-art care for patients facing shoulder issues.

Recently, Dr. Robinson hosted a visiting surgeon from Melbourne, Dr. David Eddis, an orthopaedic specialist from regional Victoria. During the visit, Dr. Eddis observed Dr. Robinson’s procedures and gained valuable insights into the latest best practices for shoulder arthroplasty.

Dr. Robinson had the honour of presenting at the 2024 Ramsay Health Care Annual GP Conference on the Sunshine Coast. His presentation focused on shoulder arthroplasty, aiming to educate general practitioners on the latest best practices for both non-operative and operative treatment of glenohumeral arthritis and cuff tear arthropathy. During this intensive five-hour session, he focused on imparting advanced techniques in fracture reverse navigation to local orthopaedic shoulder surgeons.

The workshop was designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of participants, emphasising the importance of precision and innovation in shoulder surgery. Mark’s expertise in this area allowed him to provide in-depth demonstrations and engage in hands-on practice, fostering an interactive learning environment.

Dr. Robinson recently had the pleasure of presenting to the local physiotherapy team at the Integrated Rehab Centre (IRC), where he shared his expertise on advanced surgical techniques for rotator cuff repair. During the session, Dr. Robinson provided an in-depth look at the complexities of rotator cuff injuries, outlining the surgical approaches he utilises to restore shoulder function and alleviate pain. He also discussed the role that physiotherapists play in the post-operative rehabilitation process, emphasising the importance of a collaborative approach to help patients achieve optimal recovery. Dr. Robinson had the opportunity to observe Dr. Remy Charvet, a distinguished shoulder surgeon based in Grenoble, France. Dr. Charvet welcomed Dr. Robinson into his operating theatre to demonstrate his innovative techniques in shoulder arthroplasty as part of the Annecy Live Surgery event.

During this visit, Mark also explored the Blue Ortho navigation hub located in Meylan, on the outskirts of Grenoble. Blue Ortho specialises in developing and marketing computer-assisted surgical systems for orthopaedics.
