What to Expect at Your Noosa Fracture Clinic Visit

R

Initial assessment by a qualified doctor

Your visit begins with a thorough consultation and physical examination by an experienced doctor who specialises in musculoskeletal injuries. They will assess your condition, review your symptoms, and discuss any previous treatments or concerns.

R

Review of X-rays or imaging to confirm fracture type and healing progress

If you’ve had X-rays or other imaging completed, our team will carefully review these to confirm the type of fracture or injury and assess how well it’s healing. If imaging hasn’t been done yet, we can help arrange it as part of your care plan.

R

Cast or splint adjustments if needed

Our clinic uses modern casting and splinting techniques. If you already have a cast or splint, we’ll check to ensure it’s fitting correctly and providing optimal support. Adjustments or replacements may be made to maximise comfort and healing. Waterproof options also available.

R

Surgical consultation, if required

While many fractures can be treated without surgery, some complex cases may benefit from a surgical opinion. If needed, you’ll be referred to our senior orthopaedic consultant for further evaluation and treatment planning.

R

Return-to-work and activity guidance

We’ll offer clear advice on when and how you can safely return to work, sports, or other activities. Our goal is to support your recovery while helping you get back to your regular routine as safely and quickly as possible.

R

Physiotherapy referrals for rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is a key part of recovery. Where appropriate, we provide referrals to trusted local physiotherapists who can guide you through exercises and treatments to restore strength, movement, and function.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about fractures? You’re not alone. Whether you’re unsure if you’ve broken a bone or wondering what to expect during recovery, our FAQs cover the essentials to help you feel informed and supported.

A

How do I tell if I've broken a bone?

Not every break is obvious. You might have a fracture even if you can still move the limb. Signs include pain, swelling, bruising, difficulty using the area, or a cracking sound at the time of injury. Unless the bone is clearly out of place or piercing the skin, a break might not be easy to spot — the only way to know for sure is with an X-ray.

A

How long does it take for a fracture to heal?

Most fractures heal in 6 to 8 weeks, but recovery time depends on the location and severity of the break, as well as your age, general health, and whether surgery was needed. Some complex fractures can take several months to fully heal.

A

Will I need a cast for my fracture?

Not all fractures require a cast. Some can be treated with a splint, brace, or sling, while others (especially unstable or displaced fractures) may require surgical fixation using plates, screws, or rods. Treatment depends on the type of fracture and the bone involved.

A

What can I do to help my bone heal faster?

You can support healing by:

  • Not smoking (smoking slows bone healing)
  • Eating a healthy diet rich in calcium and vitamin D
  • Following activity restrictions carefully
  • Attending follow-up appointments for X-rays and review

Healing takes time—following your care plan is the best way to ensure a strong recovery.

A

Will I need surgery for my broken bone?

Not all fractures need surgery. Many heal well with casts, splints, or braces. Surgery is only required if the bone is significantly displaced, unstable, involves a joint, or if there are multiple fragments.

A

Will I need physiotherapy after my fracture?

In most cases, yes. Physiotherapy helps restore movement, strength, and function after immobilisation (like being in a cast or sling). Your physiotherapist will guide you through safe exercises to speed up recovery and prevent stiffness or weakness.
